Bitcoin to Sponsor College Football Bowl Game

It’s no secret that Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general are going to be a very important part of future economic activity worldwide. But among the ‘Joe and Suzy SixPack’ types in ‘Flyover Country’ Bitcoin remains an unknown concept or more problematically something that should be feared thanks to the mainstream media and their tech fear mongering. Service provider BitPay is hoping to change that with their sponsorship of a college football bowl game and they’re making Bitcoin the ‘name on the marquee’.

The St. Petersburg Bowl which will be played this year on December 26 and broadcast on ESPN is now the ‘Bitcoin St. Peterburg Bowl‘. BitPay has signed a deal to serve as the game’s title sponsor for the next three years. BitPay Executive Chairman Tony Gallippi says that his company’s goal with the sponsorship deal is ‘to move Bitcoin into the mainstream’ and notes that college football and the cryptocurrency share a similar target demographic of ‘tech savvy men between the ages of 18 and 40’.

St. Petersburg Bowl Executive Director Brett Dulaney went pretty much by the book in his comments which welcomed BitPay as a title sponsor and indicated that they’re hoping for a long relationship with the company. The plan is to not only rally the Bitcoin community around the bowl game but to use it as a platform to promote interest and awareness among the unwashed masses. And nothing says ‘mainstream America’ more than college football.

It’s been a good couple of weeks for Bitcoin’s assault on the mainstream. Another big company–Expedia–started accepting Bitcoin for payment, BTC valuation was added to the finance pages of both Google and Yahoo and perhaps most significantly Apple reversed policy course and now allows Bitcoin wallets and other apps in their ecosystem. All while the mainstream media continues their misinformed scare campaign and Bitcoin contrarians suggest that every negative event will sink the currency (eg: Bolivia banning Bitcoin, US Marshall’s auction of Silk Road Bitcoin’s, etc) which remains very stable and resilient.

The 2014 Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl will be played on December 26 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. It is in the first year of new conference affiliation with the ACC and the American Athletic Conference and will be broadcast on ESPN. Tickets will go on sale later this year and naturally Bitcoin will be accepted for their purchase.
